Patterns in IMF Growth Forecast Revisions: A Panel Study at Multiple Horizons

نویسندگان

چکیده

This paper investigates the performance of IMF WEO growth forecast revisions across different horizons and country groups. We find that: (i) in closer to actual are generally larger, more volatile, negative; (ii) on average, right direction, becoming progressively responsive error gap as get year; (iii) systemic economies relevant for all groups; (iv) Consensus Forecast highly correlated; (v) fall-to-spring correlated with Forecasts compared spring-to-fall revisions; (vi) vintages, a given time horizon not autocorrelated; within tend be positively correlated, suggesting perception persistent short-term shocks.

Density forecast revisions and forecast efficiency

We explain that revisions to successive density forecasts of the same outcome, as measured by the Kullback-Leibler Information Criterion, need not be unpredictable, unlike those to conditional mean forecasts, even when the forecaster uses information efficiently. However one can still test the efficiency of fixed-event conditional density forecasts, similarly to conditional mean forecasts, by t...

New Tests of Forecast Optimality Across Multiple Horizons

We propose new tests of forecast optimality that exploit information contained in multi-horizon forecasts. In addition to implying zero forecast bias and zero autocorrelation in forecast errors, we show that forecast optimality under squared error loss also implies testable restrictions on second moments of the data ordered at long and short forecast horizons. In particular, the variance of the...

Forecast horizons and dynamic facility location planning

We consider a dynamic facility location model in which the objective is to find a planning horizon, x*, and a first period decision, XI*, such that XI* is a first period decision for at least one optimal policy for all problems with planning horizons equal to or longer than x*. In other words, we seek a planning horizon, "r*, such that conditions after x* do not influence the choice of the opti...

Minimal Forecast Horizons: An Integer Programming Approach

The concept of a forecast horizon has been widely studied in the operations management/research literature in the context of evaluating the impact of future data on current decisions in a multi-period decision making environment. As a solution approach for computing forecast horizons, integer programming has been largely ignored by the research community. However, the modelling and structural a...

Forecast Horizons for a Class of Dynamic Games

In theory, a Markov perfect equilibrium of an infinite horizon, non-stationary dynamic game requires from players the ability to forecast an infinite amount of data. In this paper, we prove that early strategic decisions are effectively decoupled from the tail game, in non-stationary dynamic games with discounting and uniformly bounded rewards. This decoupling is formalized by the notion of a “...
